When you erect a new antenna, hook  it to your radio and start tuning in anticipation of all the rare DX you are going to hear, a problem sometimes arises. Overload. This can happen on any radio but portables are generally more susceptible to this problem. A simple voltage divider attenuator will allow you to cut the signal strength down to an acceptable level. This is, in my opinion, preferable to shortening the antenna as usually only the stronger stations will give problems and the weaker ones will present no overload at all. Of course, if your radio overloads on most all signals, shortening the antenna is called for
